“The Martha Stewart Show” – Blogger Edition!

Martha-stewart-show-tv2

I was one of the lucky bloggers who received tickets to attend Martha Stewart's long-awaited blogger show!  This morning I was seated in a studio audience surrounded by bloggers from all across the country!  It's always been a dream of mine to visit "The Martha Stewart" show (and not an unrealistic one, since it's taped right here in New York City), as she so beautifully exemplifies skills that are near and dear to me: crafting, culinary arts, entertaining, cake decorating, home making, and the list goes on. Martha is my muse, if you will, and admittedly I am so not anywhere near her level of home making finesse.  She makes it look so easy, doesn't she?  Needless to say, I was just completely tickled to be a part of the studio audience.

BloggerShow 003

You see, I sincerely appreciate Martha's pleasant, always lady-like yet no-nonsense, demeanor and dry wit.  She's a business woman, foremost, who defies the stereotypes of the soft, slightly scattered, passive homemaker.  When Martha announced that she was doing a show dedicated to bloggers I knew this was the opportunity I'd been waiting for! (By the way, Martha is an avid blogger as well!) I applied for tickets (we had to answer several detailed questions, including what our blog was about, the premise of the blog, our unique skills as a crafter, etc) and was excited to learn that I'd been picked to attend the show!

Upon arriving (at 8:30 am) the bloggers congregated in two waiting room areas, where we had the opportunity to mingle and schmooze.  It was wonderful to meet new bloggers and also reconnect with many of my old blogger pals!

We were finally allowed into the studio and I gasped in astonishment and delight!  Martha's studio looked more like the photo shoot for a Better Homes and Gardens magazine spread than a talk show studio.  Oh good heavens – it was a homemakers dream!  There was a gorgeous kitchen, green room, crafting studio… beautiful!  But then, I wouldn't have expected anything less from Martha.  You know what I mean?

BloggerShow 026

Once we were seated tech crew helped audience members set up their wi-fi, as audience members were encouraged to blog and tweet throughout the show!  Internet was lightening fast in the studio, so I was quickly able to get set up on TweetChat, which I used during the taping (hashtag #blogshow). If you follow me on Twitter than you were likely keeping up as I live tweeted throughout the show.

BloggerShow 015

Just before the show went live (at 10:00 am) one of the producers came up to where I was seated and informed me that they'd been watching me and really "liked my energy."  So she wanted to know if it was alright if the camera panned to me and zoomed in when the show opened.  Oh wow, how neat is that!?  Didn't even know I was exuding "good energy." :-)   I told her that of course it was okay!

Check me out at .02 seconds into the video.  It was very funny when folks were tweeting me from home that they'd just seen me on TV.  Hehe – my 15 minutes of fame (okay, fine, my 4 seconds of fame).

BloggerShow 022

Martha is just as lovely and poised in person as she is on the show. She was also quite warm and personable, which was a pleasant surprise for me.  It really was a pleasure to see her "in vivo" after watching her all these years.  I'd always felt it wasn't the best idea to meet those "legends" we idolize in our mind – it's often a disappointment when people don't measure up to the fantasies you've enjoyed all the years.  I remember idolizing Big Bird for years and years on Sesame Street growing up – he was so big and tall and bright!  When I had the chance to meet Big Bird years later…  *sigh* ummm, not so much.  However, Martha met (and exceeded) every single expectation that I had.  So it was a really wonderful experience, made only that much greater by being surrounded by like-minded social media enthusiasts.

The show was tons of fun, with a bevy of awesome guests including the "Whatever" girls Alexis Stewart and  Jennifer Koppelman-Hutt, chef Pim Techamuanvivit, journalist Brian Williams, and actor Jeff Blumenkrantz.  After the show ended Martha graciously stayed around to answer audience questions.  One of the questions was where did she get her very sexy stilettos she was effortlessly cooking and crafting in throughout the show?!!  The answer: Yves Saint Laurent.

BloggerShow 024

Yes, priceless. :-)

After the show I met Derek at his job in mid-town to get the car and also run a few errands.  We enjoyed an impromptu, romantic lunch date at a quaint little Italian restaurant and I also got to meet a few of his co-workers who I didn't know.  I learned that some of them enjoy reading my blog, which was a wonderful surprise to me!

You can click here to view the entire show.  And here is the list of all the bloggers in attendance.  Also, be sure to check out my Blogger Events photo album for more pictures from the day!

Chase Attends His First Birthday Shindig!

Party

You may remember, a few months back, when Chase had his first play date with his buddy LT.  LT is the son of Derek's good friend and law school buddy, Lester, and I adore his wife as well.  Bebe and I were pregnant at the same time and LT is about a week and a half older than Chase.  So hanging out with the Taylors is always a good time – as we have lots in common!  The boys had fun together at their first play date, and I got lots of cute video footage as well.

LT celebrated his first birthday last Saturday and we made it to the festivities even in the blizzard!  It was important to us to share this very special, milestone birthday with our friends.  So we bundled up in our warmest winter wear and headed out.  There were many guests at the party, family and friends.  The food was soo delish (my mouth is watering thinking about this shrimp/pasta with pesto dish that Bebe prepared) and the drinks were flowing!  :-)

Derek and I had a nice time, chatting and mingling with the other folks while Chase got acquainted with other little party guests!  But I think Chase had the most fun of all!

Halloween 2009 – Celebrating “The Princess and the Frog”

Halloween7

So I tried my darndest to keep this year's costumes a secret, but I was bursting with such excitement that I leaked to a few of you!  As most of you probably know by now Disney will introduce the first African-American princess in fairy tale history in "The Princess and the Frog."  I'm beyond delighted about this because the implied message of Princess Tiana is that African-American girls can be as elegant and beautiful as Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, and all the other European Disney princesses.

Tiana1

Princess Tiana symbolizes a culture-changing standard of feminine beauty and it was important to me to share with the world just how beautiful and important Tiana is to our community!  So in honor of this cultural milestone I decided that we would go as characters from The Princess and the Frog – well, the Etheridge family version, anyway (lol).

I mentioned yesterday that we had "big plans" for Chase's first Halloween.  Well, before leaving for our function we enjoyed a mini-photo session in the Enchanted Garden (a la our backyard).

The Tale of the Princess and the Frog

Halloween4

There once lived a beautiful Princess named Tiana who lived in an Enchanted Castle far away.  She had but one friend, a handsome young frog named Chase.  He had once been a prince but many years ago was turned into a frog after a witch cast an evil spell.

Halloween3

To become a real person again all the frog needed was the kiss from a princess.

Halloween5

One magical evening, while waltzing in the Enchanted Garden…

Halloween6

Princess Tiana decided to give her frog friend a kiss!

Halloween2

And POOF… the Frog Prince became a handsome, big, strong King!

Halloween1

And they all lived happily ever after in their Enchanted Kingdom!

The End

(Ha ha, a tad Oedipal, I know.  Told ya it was the Etheridge family rendition :-)

So Chase's very first Halloween celebration was spent in…. none other than The Village – how absolutely classic New York, right?  LOL!!!  Before the mayhem and chaos of the Annual Halloween Parade ensued we attended Halloween Fun Day in Greenwich Village.

We had a really nice time!  Chase of course loves music and was intrigued by the assortment of instruments available to play (and eat, of course!)  Oh, and might I add, we were quite popular in our Princess Tiana and Frog Prince costume – we were the only coordinating family!

I think it's safe to say that Chase thoroughly enjoyed his first Halloween!  Aaaah, and he has no idea that his mom is a Halloween-fiend and that the best is yet to come – but he'll find out soon enough!!!! *wicked witch laugh*

Hope you enjoyed your Halloween celebration – be safe tonight!

Halloween Count Down

Halloween

Oh this post is a long time coming! It's been in draft mode since October 5th, and various obligations/distractions prevented me from finishing.  Now the title of the post is almost moot, as The Big Day is tomorrow!!!!! *smh*

Anyhoo, as many of you already know, Halloween is my second favorite holiday in the world (shout out to all my Xanga homies who've been hitting me up about my Halloween plans/costumes – ya'all know how I do!) *squeals* I love it so much!  I get giddy just thinking about/planning for it. My Halloween planning usually starts in the summer – around July, if I'm being honest.  Oh yes, I take it very seriously… actually, me and my best girlfriend Nichole both do. In the summer we begin to plan our costumes, our props (oh, we put it down with the props!!!), our plans, the logistics, and so on and so forth. I guess you could say I'm just a big kid when it comes to Halloween.  But really, I think it is way more fun to dress up as an adult.  When I reflect back, I don't remember Halloween being such a big deal for me as a kid.  For one, we really weren't allowed to eat candy like that… so that already detracts from a significant part of the occasion. And then my dad had concerns with the meaning of the holiday in itself…. and on top of that my parents were "frugal" when it came to buying costumes, so it would likely be something on sale or some makeshift costume from home (not to take away from that – my mom is super creative and a regular little Martha Stewart) But all in all, it was cool but not as fun or exciting to me as Christmas.  That's all changed today!

It's also a special time for me and Derek (who was never ever a Halloween-goer, but kind of got swept into it by my enthusiasm. *smile*) We met in the month of October and the fall/Halloween season will forever remind me of that romantic courtship period.

Well obviously this year is extra special because it will be Chase's first!  To celebrate I wanted to do something especially memorable and fun.  I searched and searched for the perfect Halloween event for babies/pre-walkers, but kept finding events more appropriate for toddlers and older.  I did eventually find a few suitable events at MommyPoppins.com and then narrowed it down to the perfect one!  I RSVPed to Halloween Fun Day which is a special event for babies in the Chelsea/Village area of Manhattan.  Obviously Chase at this age couldn't care either way what we do, but I enjoy Halloween so much that it was important to me that his first one be special – even if he doesn't remember it in five years.  He'll have cool pictures and we'll have fun stories and memories to share with him.

Halloween Fun Day will of course have Halloween-themed music, art/sensory activities for babies, and the kids will receive healthy goodie bags.  I already know Chase is going to have a ball with all the other babies, so I'm super excited!  Now that he's become quite the olympic crawler and can easily stand up, he definitely enjoys life in a new and exuberant way.  I've had our costumes planned out for months, and tonight (like, literally as soon as I post this blog) I'm finishing up last minute sewing revisions.  No, I didn't hand-make our costumes this year, they just needed a bit of tweaking.  And noooo, I can't tell you what we're going as…… it's a surprise!!!!! *giggles*

But like I said, Derek and I generally go all out for Halloween.  Here are a few flicks from the last few years (well, minus last year – I was almost 8 months pregnant and decided at the last minute that I hated how my costume looked on me, and chucked it).

Oh yes, Halloween is serious business in the Etheridge household.  Believe me now? LOL!!!

So what are your Halloween plans this year?

#BeatCancer – Blogging My Way to a Cure

Livestrong

Hey folks!

You all remember our friends Will and Kendra, who live in North Carolina (by way of NY) with their two boys?  Will and Derek have been very close friends for a number of years, and I met them through him.  I always look forward to opportunities to get together and fellowship with Will and Kendra because I know it's going to be a positive, good time.  I appreciate the Mondens because they're similar to us in many ways, but especially in terms of our values, principles, and the way we raise our boys.  Their two boys, Justin and Josh, are sweet, well-behaved, overall nice kids who, most importantly, get along great with Chase!  I remember I took Justin to Chuck E. Cheese once – he was four at the time, I think.  He was so funny and bright, and also very respectful and mannerly.  (See, that's important to me. I hate that children just aren't respectful anymore – calling grown-ups by their first name and things. *smh* Thats my pet-peeve).  Well, I enjoy being around their boys very much and, in fact, when Chase gets old enough to be left alone I'd trust him going over to the Monden's home for "sleep-overs" anytime, because I love this family very much and know they wouldn't have Chase involved in anything Derek and I wouldn't condone.  And you sure can't say that about every parent/child/family!

I also enjoy Derek's and my relationship with Will and Kendra because they're one of our few "couple friends."  I love to hang out with other fun couples who are in the same place as us.  A pastoral counselor once said, regarding marriage: "It's not your single friends who are going to keep you married.  It's your couple friends." Mark it – Amen!  We have so few friendships with other couples and this saddens me.  But then, finding decent couple friends is more challenging than it seems. You have to like both of them, and they have to like both of you.  The chances of connecting on all cylinders are slim – but we have this with the Mondens and it's very cool.

Friends
from l to r: Justin, Chase, Will, Josh – Easter 2008

But the purpose of this post isn't to simply gush about why I adore this family so much (lol). It's to tell you guys that Will has decided to run the ING New York City Marathon in support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation!  He is running in honor of the millions who deal with cancer everyday but, even more personally, he is running in honor of his father's courage and strength. His dad was diagnosed with a lymphoma in 2000.  He battled courageously for 12 months, through numerous rounds of chemo and 34 radiation treatments.  After the initial progress, he suffered a setback with the resurgence of his cancer in 2007.  Even with the setback he maintained a positive attitude and vowed to fight! His strength is what inspired Will to sign up to run this marathon. The prospect of greeting his dad at the finish line has been constant inspiration to keep running when his legs just want to stop.  His fight is a reminder that life is about struggles and, more importantly, how you confront them.

For as long as I've known him, Will has always been a really active guy who jogs regularly and does his best to stay in shape and lead a healthy life for himself and his family.  He has successfully run half marathons in the past, but this will be his very first time running a full, 26.2 mile marathon!  So… it's a big deal! *smile* He's been training for a really long time and feels ready.  We're so proud of him!

I'm excited to have an opportunity to support him in this endeavor.  I lost my grandmother to ovarian cancer and  have friends who have battled this disease as well.  I'm sure we can all think about someone we know (or know ""of") with cancer.  I admire Will so much for taking on this challenge.  If I'm being completely honest with myself (which I try to be most of the time) I know that I'm way too unmotivated (read: lazy) to follow through on such an ambitious goal – so I respect and admire those who do undertake this challenge!  Awesome!  I'm always glad to support folks running for such a great cause.  In running this marathon, Will is showing his boys not only the importance of living healthy but also of giving back.

I personally think there's no better way to utilize social media than for charitable causes.  So when Will asked me to mention this marathon to my readers I was more than glad to do so.  Folks, please lend your support, either by leaving a comment wishing Will good luck or by making a pledge HERE (you can give as little as $5 – every bit counts!)  Will's goal is to raise $3500 and he is currently at $1000.  Every dollar donated goes toward funding research and kicking cancer in its butt!

Folks, if you use Facebook or Twitter today be sure to include the hash tag #beatcancer in your posts to raise money for cancer related charities.  Each Tweet or Facebook post raises $.01, the goal being that the more it is spread through people's networks, the more people re-tweet and re-post, the potential for money raised rises exponentially.

Will, you are already a winner in our eyes!  We will be cheering for you on November 1! Godspeed to anyone battling this dreaded disease!

Blogalicious 2009 Experience – Priceless!

Blogalicious Site Badge

Hi ladies!

So I'm back home after a reaallllyy incredible time in Atlanta for the inaugural year of Blogalicious 2009.  What an awesome event!  The sisterhood was just so strong – a bevy of smart, talented, and incredibly gifted women (of all colors!) all in one place.  It was amazing.

Goodness, I learned sooo much over the course of just a weekend – invaluable information about Web 2.0 that I definitely plan to use to better my blog as well as great stuff to share with those of you who are aspiring bloggers and/or just interested in social media.  I did a lot of tweeting over the course of the conference, so hopefully some of you were able to keep abreast of me that way.  Oh, speaking of Twitter, I'm officially @ThePrissyMommy.  @SweetWifey is no more! (lol) But I digress.

So Blogalicious!  Although I had indicated before leaving that I intended to post in tidbits every day of the conference, I realized by the end of Day 1 that this goal was way too ambitious.  I fell into bed each night exhausted – was able to muster up the strength to post photos, but that's about it.  So here is my recap.  I'll try to keep it short and sweet!

So the official hotel of the conference was the The W.  Omg – tres magnifique!  Although we've got a W Hotel in Times Square I've never stayed in one. So not exaggerating when I tell you that I gasped with surprise and pleasure when I opened the hotel room… not sure what I was expecting, but certainly not this for a STANDARD room:

You must click to enlarge for the full view – I beg of you!

It sure didn't hurt to come home to a little luxury every evening.

After we checked in we headed to the Welcome Cocktail Reception.  Chase came along because Derek hadn't yet arrived in town (he couldn't take Friday off work as I had).  So Chase got to meet some of the great ladies mommy has interacted with online but hadn't yet the pleasure of meeting.

During the plenary sessions I couldn't take notes fast enough – a REAL wealth of information!  I was especially inspired by speeches from Denene Millner and Karen Walrond.  Between sessions I enjoyed visiting the exhibit halls, meeting the various sponsors and, of course fellow-shipping with other like-minded blogging women.  There were d
octors, accountants, homemakers, lawyers, marketers, moms, sisters, daughters, wives… and I have to say, it felt like "home." I love all my "IRL" friends to death – but there is no connection like that of a social media enthusiast.

I am so thankful
to have been able to attend this inaugural event.  We truly made history! Although I only knew a handful of women in attendance prior to coming down I immediately felt as though I was amongst friends. Throughout the entire conference there was such a sense of warmth and camaraderie.  I left the conference with a purse full of (super cute!) business/blogger cards and a renewed sense of excitement and desire to fulfill all my blogging goals/dreams.

Thank you, MamaLaw, for coming up with such a phenomenal concept and for making this conference a HUGE success.  Thank you, MomSelect, for making this trip possible for me!  Welcome, new blogger friends and subscribers – I'm looking forward to following you as well!

Mom Fuse Feature & Site Updates

BabyShowNYC 015

Mommy and Chase doing press at The Baby Show in Manhattan

This past weekend Chase and I had the pleasure of attending The Baby Show NYC on behalf of Mom Fuse, an online magazine and resource for moms where I'm a contributing Mommy Blogger.  It was an informative and fun-filled day and we left with bags and bags of free goodies!  We spent the day with my fellow blogger/gal pal Nikki (@ EuphoriaLuv) and her cutie-patootie little tot, Daniel.  For a recount of events from The Baby Show you can head on over to MomFuse.com to check out my featured post.

So as you know I'm continually looking for new ways to better my blog and make it more reader-friendly, in terms of content as well as style.  With that said here are recent site updates:

I noticed via my nifty little Lijit widget that popular searches on my blog are:

Well dern!!!  While this is of course my mommy/baby blog, you all know I also love to talk hair/beauty/self-care and all things girly.  I've struggled with finding the balance between blogging about new motherhood and also blogging personal care – not wanting to over-saturate and subsequently bore anyone with too much of either.

Yet it seems that many folks who visit are actually enjoying the beauty talk (namely the hair stuff) sooo… I guess I'll feel free to continue sharing my post-partum hair updates and other tips.  Hey, if hair is what you want, hair is what you'll get – I believe in giving the people what they want! (lol)

Does anyone care about my Friday Recipe Exchange?  I ask because I tend to get very few comments on those posts (and minimal click-throughs via FeedBurner).  If no one is interested I'll simply discontinue that little section (lol).

I've included a poll below so you can vote. *shrug* Feel free to be candid as all votes are anonymous. Depending on the results of this poll I'll decide to keep it going or give it the axe.  Trust me, I'm totally cool with doing either. *smile*

Do You Like Prissy Mommy's Friday Featured Recipe?(polls)

This update isn't "new" so much as I hadn't mentioned it just yet.  In the left sidebar module you'll see that I've added a Networked Blogs widget.  If you're a member of the Facebook or Networked Blogs community I'd love it if you would become a follower of The Prissy Mommy Chronicles and, of course, if you're a fellow blogger I'd be delighted to return the favor and make a new blogger friend.

Omg, uber excited about Blogalicious 2009… just four days away and counting down!  Derek, Chase, and I are headed down to HOTlanta (okay, probably COLDlanta right about now) for the conference and I just.can't.wait.  Be prepared for lots and lots of blog coverage with pics and videos!  I'm going to do my best to post in segments, as events occur, so you don't have one looong dissertation-length post to read upon my return – that's no fun, right? lol

And speaking of conferences… you may have noticed that I recently added a BlogHer 2010  button to the right sidebar module!  That's right folks, BlogHer is hitting the streets of The Big Apple and I‘d love to attend the conference.  I was sad that I missed BlogHer 2009 but no excuses for the next conference right in my own backyard! *smile*

I'm seeking sponsors to help defray the costs of registration and other conference-related expenses.  Right now I'm working on a short video just introducing myself to companies and explaining how fantastic it would be to work with me and why. *smile*  So… be on the look out for that!

Muchas Smoochas!

The Baby Show NYC

Image

Hey folks!  So remember a couple months back when I was sooo amped about getting my cute lil' Mommy Cards and how I was looking forward to card-exchange opps to show them off? (LOL) Well there's another "card opp" coming up in a few weeks!  Yaaaaay!!!

I was invited to The Baby Show NYC by Mom Fuse, an online magazine for mothers where I'm a new contributing mom blogger.  I'm super excited about this opportunity as I know I'll not only meet other new moms in the area, but I'll also get to check out the top "must-have" baby products and services.  As Chase is becoming more mobile and curious by the day I'm constantly thinking about fun and creative ways to keep him stimulated (and safe!) in our home – and I'm quite sure The Baby Show will be showcasing many wonderful toys/activities that will be perfect for us as we transition into parents to a tot.  I just know the show is going to be a high-energy, family-friendly good time, so I'm bringing Chase along (he loves mingling with other babies!) and hopefully seeing some of my mom blogger friends I've met over the last few months. I'll also be inviting my best friend who is expecting her first babe in late March – she's just beginning to work on her baby registry, and I know she'll get all sorts of great ideas here.

The Baby Show NYC is essentially a celebration of all things baby!  It's a response to NYC parents in their search for
the best products and practices for new born babies to young toddlers.  The showcase will feature free lectures and seminars from baby experts, doctors, and a variety of exhibitors.  I'm especially looking forward to the presentation by Sarah Merian Photography, since we're on the hunt now for a good studio to take Chase's one year portraits.  I'm also eager to check out the seminar by Inhabitots called Green Baby 101.

The Baby Show is taking place on Saturday, October 3 from 11 am – 7 pm and October 4 from 10 am – 6 pm.  If you're interested in attending you can still get tickets here.  If you think you might go, definitely shoot me an email – I'd love to meet you!  I'll of course be taking lots of pics as well as blogging about my experience there, and you can find that blog post over at Mom Fuse.  I can't wait!!!
